Gantz withdraws and calls for unity as Winter pledges to stay in the race

Gantz withdraws and calls for national unity

In his resignation speech, Benny Gantz said:

“Unfortunately, at this time, I have not succeeded in convincing enough of the public to support our path — and the responsibility is mine. I remain convinced that our path is the right one: the need for a Zionist national unity government that crosses political blocs is greater than any individual or party, and it is the only solution for the people of Israel.”

Gantz warned:

“I appeal from here to the leaders of the public, as a citizen of this country: Do not take us back to October 6. Be courageous enough to bring about real change. I warn you: If that does not happen, our nation will continue to be torn apart, and we will end up facing another round of elections or, God forbid, a disaster.”

On joining Netanyahu’s government after the massacre, Gantz said:

“Even tonight, I remain completely at peace with the most important decision of my public life. And if, God forbid, I am called upon to take such a step again in the future, I will do so without hesitation.”

Amit Segal argued that Gantz’s decision to join the national unity government, together with Sa’ar and Eisenkot, following October 7 was right for Israel. He maintained that, whatever the debate over Gantz’s political collapse, the unity shown after the country’s darkest day contributed to the war effort and helped the public.

Gantz did not say whom he would vote for:

“I’ve joined the ranks of undecided voters. I recommend voting for someone who doesn’t incite division among the people.”

Lapid and Asher respond to Gantz’s departure

Speaking to Kan Reshet Bet, Lapid said:

“I wish him success. This is an opportunity to remember that this is how things end for anyone who trusts Netanyahu and joins forces with him.”

United Torah Judaism chairman MK Yaakov Asher said:

“My friend Benny Gantz is a mensch, a man who has contributed greatly to the State of Israel and its security throughout many years of service and dedication. I wish him great success and am confident that he will return to contribute his abilities and talents to the leadership of the country in the future. Despite our differences of opinion, we have always maintained a personal relationship, respectful dialogue, and mutual appreciation. Benny is living proof that friendship and gratitude are not dependent on political blocs.”

Winter pledges to remain in the race

Following Gantz’s withdrawal, Ofer Winter declared:

“Amcha Yisrael will stay in the race until the end.”

Minister Karhi said on Channel 14:

“Winter is on Palestine’s side.”

Amit Segal described Winter as right-wing rather than pro-Palestinian, while assessing that his dilemma over remaining in the race was becoming increasingly acute.
