Ben-Gvir says more than 19,000 illegal structures demolished in the Negev
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said Thursday that he would continue taking part in operations to demolish illegal structures in the Negev, despite Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara’s directive to refrain, according to material supplied by Otzma Yehudit.
Ben-Gvir argued that the directive was unlawful and beyond her authority. In his letter to the attorney general, he wrote:
“Your directive is unlawful and without authority. Not only is there nothing to prevent a minister from overseeing, inspecting and attending activities carried out under his ministry, as every minister before me has done, it is in fact desirable.”
He said he would continue leading what he described as governance reform and the return of state lands to state hands:
“I will continue to lead the governance reform and the return of state lands to state hands. I will continue to take an active part in the field, to examine the illegal-structure demolition project up close, and to back the police officers and dedicated civil servants who are carrying out my policy.”
Ben-Gvir also criticized the attorney general and her predecessors:
“After years in which you and your predecessors allowed lawlessness and forgot that there is such a thing as ‘law enforcement’ in the Negev too, you would do well to welcome every single demolition carried out on my watch.”
He closed by thanking the enforcement forces and stating that more than 19,000 illegal structures had been demolished in the Negev during his term, “despite your attempts to thwart and prevent it.”
