Shas announces it will recommend Netanyahu

The Shas Council of Torah Sages decided to recommend Netanyahu to the president following his statement reaffirming support for regulating the status of Torah scholars.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said:

“For four years, we have witnessed relentless attacks on the ultra-Orthodox community, morning and night, by the media and the left-wing bloc. The hypocrisy we are seeing now is staggering.

Suddenly, it is no longer a ‘draft evasion law’ but a ‘soft conscription law.’ Suddenly, they are no longer ‘parasites,’ ‘draft dodgers,’ or ‘destroyers of the country.’ Instead, they are being given a clean slate—all for the sake of the left’s thirst for power, while breaking every promise they made during the elections.

The only ones who have worked, and will continue to work, to regulate the status of Torah scholars so that anyone who studies Torah can continue to do so legally are Likud and the right-wing bloc.

In the face of attempts to manipulate public opinion, we insisted on creating a genuine solution, through agreement and cooperation with the leaders and elected representatives of the ultra-Orthodox community, while ensuring that anyone who does not study Torah in a yeshiva will enlist in the IDF—entering as an ultra-Orthodox Jew and leaving as an ultra-Orthodox Jew.

We will work to complete this important mission.”

Segal assessed that although Netanyahu’s message appeared directed at the opposition, its intended audience was the ultra-Orthodox community.

Shas described Netanyahu’s commitment as clear and unequivocal. The party accused left-wing parties of hypocrisy after what it described as an unprecedented campaign of vilification, defamation and persecution against the ultra-Orthodox community and Torah scholars, whom it called the bedrock of the Jewish people’s existence.

Netanyahu also spoke this morning with United Torah Judaism chairman Yaakov Asher.

Religious Zionism will endorse Netanyahu and is expected to call for “the formation of a broad Jewish government led by Netanyahu.”

Trump says U.S. aid to Israel will stop by year’s end

President Trump said he had reached an agreement with Israel a few months ago to halt $4 billion in annual aid.

“I have agreed with Netanyahu to stop aid to Israel by the end of the year because they don’t need it. We won’t be paying any more to Israel.

By the end of this year, we won’t be paying Israel. They are fine with it. We will help Israel if they need it”.
